Abstract

Objectives: This study was conducted to find the prevalence of osteoporosis and its related factors among rural women as basic data to develope educational materials to prevent and for longitudinal observatory study.

Methods: Toward 596 40~70 year old women living in Bongwhang Township, Naju City, Chollanamdo, examinations including quantitative ultrasound (QUS) bone densitometry, questionnaire survey for life-style, anthropologic measurements and blood tests were performed for 45 days from January 9th, 2006. Osteoporosis was defined as T score -2.5 or below and T score -1.0 or above was nominated as normal group. Odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence interval of osteoporosis group versus normal group were calculated by potential risk factors. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to find significant and dependent related factors.

Results: The prevalence of osteoporosis among the subjects was 19.0%. The multiple logistic regression analysis showed that tile OR of osteoporosis among elementary educated group compared to non-educated group was 0.34 (95%CI: 0.16~0.73). The OR of osteoporosis among subjects whose body mass index (BMI) were 25 §¸/§³ or more against lower than 25 §¸/§³ was 0.32 (95%CI: 0.15~0.70). The OR of osteoporosis among subjects who had started menarche later than 20 years old as compared to subjects who had started menarche before 15 years old was 4.73 (95%CI: 1.27~17.7).

Conclusions: Late menarche age was the risk factor reward osteoporosis, while high education and high BMI were the protective factors against osteoporosis in study population.
